Separating similar platforms

Facebook, Reddit and VK

These three platforms are what you most likely think of straight away when it comes to social media, apart from VK. As oppose to Facebook and Reddit, VK is a social platform aimed at Eastern European users. In other words, it is their version of Facebook. The similarities are very close since they both look almost exactly the same, with even the colour theme both being a type of blue. Reddit on the other hand would have to be the most different out of all as far as the appearance and overall layout goes. Lastly, Facebook and VK seem to contain more rules and restrictions then Reddit.

Pinterest and Instagram

Pinterest and Instagram are both extremely similar when it comes to the type of content posted. Images and videos are the main source of content. No text or such can be posted unless one of these two are included. The differences between these two platforms though firstly is that Instagram is aimed at following other accounts and advertising certain products while including hashtags. Much like Facebook, it is to connect with other users and share certain content. Pinterest aims more at the user’s own personal newsfeed experience. It is all about the customisation of what you see in your newsfeed by pinning posts and content that you seem to take interest in the most.

Flickr and DeviantArt

Firstly, Flickr is the perfect platform for photographers. If you are one and are deciding on where to post and share your work with other photographers, this is the best place to go to since it is solely aimed at this. Many different categories are offered meaning variety spans out to many groups of interest. DeviantArt however is aimed more at Illustration content. Artists, designers and etc. find that this is their platform to share with each other their work and ideas. Oppose to Flickr however, DeviantArt has the ability to post not only images but videos too. Animation being the most popular, there are many categories to check out and take interest in

Vimeo and YouTube

Vimeo and Youtube’s most common similarity is that they both use videos as their one and only source of content. However, both attract different groups of users. Vimeo is mainly focused on aspiring filmmakers, vloggers and even travellers that like to share their own and each other’s work. Though the downfall here is that they limit how much you can post each week, unless you buy the available packages. However, with YouTube anyone can sign up and post as much content as they want free of charge. As far as content goes, almost any category imaginable can be found.

Website Building Services

Building your very own website can be daunting at first, especially if it is a one-man job. Therefore, in today’s post four website building services will be looked at and compared with to ensure which one suits better, depending on the scenario.

WordPress:

WordPress starts off as a free building website that mainly focuses on blog users. Customers can easily sign up to and start within no time. However, there are plans that must be paid for to get bonuses and more to work with. One ability the site offers well is to start your own website reasonably quickly yet it still looks professional and aesthetically pleasing. A flaw in the website however is finding out how to do certain things. It takes a good amount of time and exploring the site to know how to operate it, however is great for beginners and simple blog users.

Wix:

Wix is broader with what it can offer apart from just blogging. Almost any type of website you wish to make with this building service, it can achieve. There are plans available that add extra privileges, similar to the WordPress site. The big advantage to this site is that there is no real requirement to access the plans. A fully functional and legitimate looking website can be built with no real dramas. This disadvantages though involve the pricing of the plans if you choose to access them. When looking at other existing website building services, it seems to be overpriced.

Tumblr:

Tumblr is mainly based on blogging, but also being able to share posts with others. Mainly focused on teenagers, this site allows users to follow others and share common interests. Posts are mainly done by images, videos and text which can be seen publicly by anyone, unless changed in the settings. Upside to this site is that it is easy to use once familiar with the design layout. Moreover, posts usually aren’t as big as standard ones seen on WordPress or Jimdo, so therefore it is quick and simple. Disadvantage to this site though is that a lot of the content can sometimes be unsatisfying. As far as having a professional business profile/website, this service wouldn’t be the recommended one to look to.

Jimdo:

Jimdo again like the other is a free to use service for building a nice and professional looking site. Though the others seem to aim more at beginners and designers, this is more focused on people with HTML and CSS code knowledge. People who are not familiar with this are still more than qualified to use it, however as far as customisation goes, CSS savvy individuals have an advantage with being able to have more variety and control of how the site appears and looks. Of course, this also falls as a flaw to the other people that are not able to have this chance. The prices to upgrade to certain plans are reasonable, more so than say a service like WordPress which seems to charge too much. If you are familiar with coding and want a site to make building a website easier for you, this for sure is the one to look at.
