On Saturday the 25th of August, Mackay was greeted with its first ever Beer and BBQ Festival held at Harrup Park in South Mackay. Hosted by the Harrup Park Country Club themselves, the festival brought together locals and people from outside the Mackay region to socialise and have a fun day full of entertainment for everyone. Sponsors that supported and helped this event take place included the 100.3 Radio Station, Triple M 98.7 and Porters Mitre 10.
For anyone who did attend the festival, they’d be sure to agree that there was no shortage of entertainment played out throughout the day. Mackay’s Best Sausage and Chilli Eating competition took place which drew the attention of many attendees. The other main event was the music competition where many bands and singers took to the stage to show off their talents and prove who was the best.

As far as the beers go, there was without a doubt more than enough to go around. 12 breweries were present at the festival. A fun fact that was mentioned throughout the day was that there were at least over 40 different beers and ciders, which ranged from local to the most common across the country.

The festival didn’t stray far at all from the BBQ theme. There were many foods stands that served different types of sausages, burgers, chips and more. One spot that seemed to do very well in particular was the kebab stand. This much like the brewery stands, was always busy throughout the day attracting many hungry mouths which was perfect for people drinking.

Live music was also played while all activities and small events occurred. While being amongst the crowd, we got some feedback from the people themselves. One individual named Dan Rinaldo from the Far North Queensland area in Ingham had this to say, “Heaps of good songs being played from live bands and that which is good.” He continued to state that previous festivals in his experience usually do not play the best of music, though he was impressed with this festival’s choice of music.
The Festival overall was a great success and it is safe to say that this will without a doubt be making a return in future years. Judging by how much fun people had and how they were talking about the event, this will definitely help support this all occurring again. The First Beer and BBQ Festival 2018 was one to remember.
